Like the mammals we are, 10 million people built spaces to work, eat, play, and sleep and routes connecting them above and below the ground and the sky, and they decorated them with symbols and colors. They leave their refuse in its corners, and they rush and pray and bow. They hold their backs behind their walkers, they laugh and yell and walk arm-in-arm with those they love. Having the honor to be in their midst is my favorite part of travel. Around every corner is another unexpected and cool thing they built to exercise their bodies or remember the past or make each other think. In the last picture in this last gallery, you can see my reflection, and a guy across the way waiting for the subway. I'm going to miss that guy.
